How to Choose a Color by Number Book for Adults: 7 Things to Check

Color by number books vary a lot, and the photos on a product page do not always show the details that matter. Use this checklist before you buy.
1. Size of the squares
This decides how comfortable the book is. Squares of about 4 mm or more are easy to fill. Squares under 3 mm look impressive but take patience and a fine tip.
2. Background
If the background is the same color on every page, you may color rows and rows of it. Books with a pre-printed black or white background let you color only the picture. Check the sample pages for this.
3. Where the color key is
A key on the page facing the grid is far easier than flipping to the front of the book every time.
4. Readable codes
One-character codes (a digit or a letter) fit small squares and avoid confusion. Look for a clear explanation of look-alike characters.
5. Paper quality
Thin paper lets markers bleed through. Plan to put a sheet of cardboard under the page, or use pencils and gel pens. Our supplies guide has more tips.
6. Answers
A picture index or color answers at the back lets you check your work without spoiling the surprise.
7. Price per puzzle
Divide the price by the number of puzzles. Cheap books with 30 puzzles can cost more per picture than a larger book.
